(Funny enough, that idea was later confirmed by Jinora in The Legend of Korra.)Īfter trying so long to meet the Earth King and recruit his forces for the solar eclipse strike, it was satisfying to see this storyline come to a satisfying close. The investigation that followed was really enjoyable, including Sokka and Aang's deductive reasoning with Appa, the Earth King's train ride and the group discovering Lake Laogai had apparently been destroyed. Over the course of the episode we got a good sense of how easily manipulated he was by Long Feng, challenging the Gaang to use their wits and prove there was in fact a war going on outside the city walls. ("We just need to get through to see the Earth King!")ĭon't mess with the best. The King himself was also voiced to perfection by LaMarr, who lent just the right amount of naiveté to the gullible character. This also came with a good bit of humor from Sokka and Katara, who apologized throughout the skirmish. Even before re-watching this episode, I remembered how awesome that sequence was, and how the group worked together to bend their way past the guards - specifically Toph, who turned the whole royal staircase into a slide and moved the team up on a block, escalator-style. Keeping up the momentum from "Lake Laogai," this chapter, refreshingly, got right down to business with the Gaang storming the palace to reach the Earth King. "The Earth King" marked a major turning point in Book Two and the series, as Team Avatar finally met "His Earthiness" (voiced by Samurai Jack's Phil LaMarr). Warning: Full spoilers from the episode follow.
